Signed and Scanned: Spartacus by Kirk Douglas
I included a link to a photo I’d taken of this cover in a previous post, which was mostly about Paths of Glory and an event I attended where Kirk Douglas was present, but here’s an actual scan of my autographed Spartacus sleeve. After just recently mentioning and reviewing Lonely Are the Brave, this seemed like a good time to again bring up the venerable Douglas. Ace in the Hole would have been preference to have signed, but that disc had only been announced and not yet released at the time.
This scan gives the cover a textured look it doesn’t really have, which can probably be attributed to my amateur scanning abilities and the solid red coloring of the cover.

Thank you for the Dixon Steele photo on your rotating banner.
Hey Clyde, I’ve been meaning to ask: Would you recommend “The Bad and the Beautiful”?
Oh, absolutely. As a Hollywood peel-back, it’s not Sunset Blvd. certainly and has a different tone. It’s a very entertaining movie, though, with an interesting structure. Gloria Grahame won the Oscar for it also. Her role is a true supporting part in that she isn’t on screen that often, but it’s really emblematic of what that category should be. She couldn’t be better. That being said, I’m not on Vincente Minnelli’s wavelength and he’s a filmmaker whose work I’ll always watch but rarely have any passion for because his skills just fail to draw me in like most of the other fifties auteurs of Hollywood.
